He’s more of a summer guy, you see. “Haven’t worn socks in 6 years,” he said, as if that were the only thing that distinguished seasons. I left it there. The sock thing seemed like a touchy subject. Since 2011 Jack has been jumping from one place to another chasing the sun. I found him during his sixth year of summer at Archer’s Point – a croc filled beach on the coast of Cooktown. “What do you do with your time?” I asked. “I fix trees. Look after the earth,” he replied, slumbered under the shade of wide palms with his dreaded head leaning against a mound of coconuts. Before he could read his mother gave him a picture book about different kinds of trees. When he learnt to put letters together, he read a book about them. Since then he’s been planting, gardening, and healing the things that make us paper. He switches between Australia and overseas, between places of solitude and places with company. He believes it’s important to share his love of the land. And because he likes company. Here at Archer’s Point, children have surrounded him for months. Often parents give them money and send them to him to buy coconuts as if he is seated inside a food truck desperately waiting for customers. I watched as he told them to put the coins in their pocket and instead taught them how to climb a tree for themselves. Children surrounded him every time. “It’s been good having them around. They look after Rosie while I go fishing. No longer have to worry about her wandering into the mouth of a croc.” Jack’s favourite summer was in a German forest where he stumbled across an abandoned log cabin and lived off wild blueberries for a season and found trees he never knew existed. “I must have eaten something hallucinatory a couple of times because some days I’d be out of it and the blueberries would be the size of my fist.” He’s only had one bad summer since starting winter strike. It was in Austria and just when he thought nature had his back, he walked right into a hornet hive and wound up tumbling down a hill to a stream where he cooled his stings and collapsed, his body swollen and sleepy. The next morning he woke to find himself surrounded by maple trees with hazelnuts growing out the trunks. Hard to snap open and he got shards through his skin every time. But once he figured out a way to crack them he was in heaven. “Hazelnuts are my favourite,” he said with closed eyes. “I forgot about the hornet stings. Almost.” And that’s Jack.
